How to Make Your Lizard Brain Stop Sabotaging You
Your Lizard Brain is either hungry, scared, selfish or horny
Let's talk about something that's been holding you back from living your best life.
It's your mostly annoying Lizard Brain.
It's that little voice inside your head that tells you that you can't do something. That you're not good enough.
That you should just give up whatever it is you're doing and go watch Netflix instead.
Well -- here's a NEWSFLASH. That little voice is your nemesis. And it's time to shut it up.
Your Lizard Brain -- also known as the reptilian brain -- is the oldest part of your brain. It's located at the base of your brain and controls your most primitive survival instincts and survival behaviors.
No feeling or thinking. Just instinct.
Your Lizard Brain is mostly:
‣ hungry
‣ scared
‣ selfish
‣ horny
It's responsible for your most basic needs like breathing, heart rate, body temperature, and hunger. It's also the part of your brain that controls your emotions -- particularly fear and anxiety. And it controls your sex drive.
When you feel threatened or face a situation outside of your comfort zone, your Lizard Brain kicks in and triggers a fight, flight or freeze response.
It's a survival mechanism that helps you respond quickly to danger.
However, even in safety -- your Lizard Brain can be activated and this can manifest as self-doubt, anxiety, and a lack of confidence.
Understanding your Lizard Brain is important because it'll help you shift your mindset towards a more positive and motivating one.
By quieting your Lizard Brain, you can improve your decision-making abilities, increase your self-esteem, and achieve your goals.
My friend, Julia, was plagued with self-doubt. She wanted to start her own business, but every time she tried, her Lizard Brain would start chirping away.
"Who do you think you are?"
"You're not smart enough for this."
"You'll never succeed."
But, she didn't give up.
Julia worked through her negative self talk and changed her mindset to a more positive one -- and finally launched her food catering business.
Here's how you shut down your pesky Lizard Brain once and for all:
☑️ Call it out. Create a mantra. When you hear that negative voice, you can say, "Hey, Lizard Brain, shut the heck up." Seriously. It works.
☑️ Practice Mindfulness. Mindfulness will quiet your Lizard Brain and increase activity in your Thinking Brain. Start with mindful breathing and a body scan to ease your Lizard Brain.
☑️ Focus on your successes. When you start to doubt yourself, think about all the things you've accomplished in the past. Even the small ones count. Celebrate those successes and use them to fuel your confidence.
☑️ Surround yourself with positive people. Have you heard the saying, "you are who you hang out with?” Well, it's true. Emotions are contagious. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and support your goals.
☑️ Take action. The best way to shut up your Lizard Brain is to take action. When you're feeling doubtful -- just start doing something. Anything. Taking action will help shift your mindset and quiet that pesky negative voice inside your head.
